Seasonal Fall Produce And CKD Management

Fall is a wonderful time of year that brings us some of the tastiest produce.  Unfortunately, not all of us can enjoy everything the fall harvest brings us. If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), some of the produce harvested this time of year may be restricted in your diet.  You may wonder how much seasonal produce can I have, what can I have, and how can I prepare it? These are common questions people with CKD ask about food and how it fits into their renal diet. 

If you have CKD, you may be concerned with how much potassium is in your diet.  High or low blood levels of potassium can be dangerous as they can affect the heart.  (Normal potassium ranges are 3.5-5.0 mmol/L). Heading into the fall season, it’s important to know what fall produce is lower in potassium so you can stay within your potassium restriction and avoid complications.  Work with your renal dietitian to determine if you need to limit your potassium intake.

Below is a list of foods harvested in the fall that you can enjoy and still manage your CKD.  All of them are below 200 mg of potassium per serving. Your portion size is as important as your food choice.  A portion size is ½ cup unless otherwise stated:

Fruit:

               

  • Blueberries
  • Apples
  • Crab apples
  • Peaches 
  • Pears
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries (field and greenhouse)
  • Watermelon (no more than 1 cup)
  • Cranberries (whole, not dried)
  • Grapes
  • Plums (1 whole)

Vegetables:

      

  • Beans-green or yellow
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery (1 stalk)
  • Corn
  • Cucumber
  • Eggplant
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Peas
  • Radishes
  • Spinach (raw not cooked)
  • Sprouts
  • Yellow Squash (not Acorn or Butternut)
  • Zucchini
  • Rapini (raw not cooked)
  • Peppers

There are many delicious fall foods you can enjoy while living with CKD.  Work with your renal dietitian to help you figure out what foods are best for your optimal health and CKD management.
