With the current COVID-19 pandemic, infection prevention is more important than ever. Practicing infection control measures protects you and others, especially vulnerable populations of individuals, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. Consistent practice of these simple tips is imperative for everyone.

  1. Wash your hands: Wash your hands for 20 seconds before and after you eat, touch shared items, prepare food, or use the washroom. If you use a hand sanitizer, use one with 60% alcohol or higher. Be sure to cover your hands, fingers, thumbs, and between your fingers entirely with soap or sanitizer.

  2. Stay home: Unless you need to go out, such as for groceries or medical appointments, stay home. Don’t make multiple trips. Maintain 6 ft between you and other people.

  3. Stay well nourished: If you are on a renal diet and/or a fluid restriction, be sure to follow it. Be sure to eat regularly scheduled meals that include a variety of food groups.

  4. Follow food safety: (see the article on www.kidneychef.com) to prevent food borne illness. Wash tops of all canned goods with soapy water. Wash and rinse produce thoroughly under running water. Do not soak in a sink full of water.

  5. Sleep: Get adequate sleep every night; at least 8 hrs. Sleep deprivation can make you more prone to illness.

  6. Maintain a routine: Maintain a routine at home to manage social isolation and your mental health.

  7. Don’t skip dialysis appointments: If you are on dialysis, go to all of your scheduled treatments. Follow proper infection control protocols.

  8. Medications: Take all medications as prescribed. Be wary of supplements; there’s no evidence they prevent infection. They may interact with any medications you may be taking.

Implementing these tips and consistently practicing them will help you prevent getting an infection, whether or not you have CKD. Be consistent, stay safe, and be well!
